Also: Vape Cart, THC Cartridge, Tank

A cannabis vape cartridge is a little cylindrical device that contains cannabis oil or concentrate. It must be attached to a vape battery to use.

What Are THC Vape Cartridges?

A THC vape cartridge (often called a cart or tank) is a glass cylinder pre-filled with cannabis oil. It gives you a simple and efficient way to vape cannabis. These cartridges are designed for convenience and come in two standard sizes: ½ gram and 1 gram. This makes them easy to carry and store.1

Each cylinder-shaped cart features a top-mounted mouthpiece for inhaling and a bottom-mounted heating element called an atomizer. When connected to a battery, the atomizer heats the oil, converting it into vapor that can be inhaled.2 THC oil cartridges are discreet and portable, making them ideal for on-the-go use. They also don’t have a strong cannabis smell, so you have a subtle, low-profile option that gives you convenience without drawing attention.3

How Do THC Cartridges Work?

THC cartridges work by heating cannabis oil to produce vapor. When you connect the cart to a compatible battery, the battery powers the atomizer, which heats the oil inside. As the oil warms, it turns into a vapor that you inhale through the mouthpiece.4 The effects of THC vape carts are typically felt within minutes since the vapor is absorbed directly into your bloodstream through your lungs. This fast-acting delivery method makes vape carts a favorite among cannabis enthusiasts who want quick effects, convenience, and efficiency.

What’s in THC Cartridges?

Most THC cartridges contain one of these main types of cannabis oil in the glass cart:5

  • THC Distillate: A purified form of THC with added terpenes for flavor. THC distillate carts don’t taste like cannabis and don’t provide the same full-spectrum effects as the plant.

  • Concentrates: Concentrates like live resin or rosin retain more of the plant’s original terpenes and cannabinoids, offering a flavor and effect profile closer to the cannabis flower.

What Types of Vape Cartridges Can I Buy?

When shopping for vape cartridges, here are the main types to consider:6

510 Thread

The most common type of THC oil cartridge is the 510-thread cart, designed to screw onto a standard battery. Known for their versatility and compatibility with most vape batteries, these carts are widely available and easy to use. They come in various options to suit different preferences. However, they can be pricey depending on the cart’s size, quality, and the type of cannabis oil inside, especially for premium strains or high-end brands.

Disposable or AIO

Growing in popularity, disposable vape pens combine the cartridge, mouthpiece, and battery in a single device, offering a hassle-free way to enjoy cannabis. They’re budget-friendly and convenient but are discarded once the oil or battery runs out. These single-use devices are ideal if you want to try different cannabis strains or avoid the maintenance a rechargeable vape pen requires. Plus, their compact design makes them perfect for on-the-go use, whether traveling or looking for a discreet option.

Devices-Specific

Some vape cartridges are designed for specific brands and compatible only with proprietary batteries. While these cartridges often offer unique features like precise temperature control, enhanced vapor quality, or exclusive cannabis oil blends, their limited compatibility can be inconvenient. You’ll need to invest in the matching battery, which may not work with other carts. However, if you’re loyal to a specific brand or enjoy its exclusive offerings, these device-specific cartridges can be a worthwhile addition to your vaping experience.7

How Do I Smoke THC Cartridges?

Smoking THC cartridges is simple and convenient. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Check the Battery

Make sure your battery is fully charged before use.

Step 2: Add the Cartridge

Attach the cartridge securely to the battery. For 510-thread carts, screw it on until snug.

Step 3: Set the Temperature (Optional)

If your battery has temperature settings, choose your desired heat level before inhaling.

Step 4: Inhale

Some batteries require pressing a button while inhaling; others are draw-activated. Inhale slowly for the best experience.

FAQs About THC Vape Cartridges

The vast selection of vape cartridges and batteries on the market leads to a lot of questions about what is best. Here are a few considerations when you go shopping:

How do I know if my THC cart will fit my battery?

Before buying, check the compatibility of the THC cartridge with the battery. Most carts use 510-thread batteries, but some are device-specific.

Do THC cartridges expire?

THC cartridges can lose potency over time as the cannabinoids degrade, especially if they’re not stored properly. Exposure to heat, light, and air can speed up this process, affecting the oil’s potency and flavor.8

What sizes do THC cartridges come in?

The most common sizes are 1 gram, ½ gram, and sometimes 2 grams.

How long does a THC vape cartridge last?

How long a THC vape cartridge lasts depends entirely on how often you use it and how much you consume per session. For light or occasional cannabis enthusiasts, a 1-gram cart can last several weeks or even months, while daily vapers might finish it within a week.

Are dab pens the same as vape pens?

Considering a dab pen vs cartridge or vape pen is about how it vaporizes cannabis, but dab pens are for concentrates, while vape pens use THC oil.9

Purchasing a Vape Cartridge

With so many options, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you’re new to vaping. Ultimately, it comes down to reusability, versatility, and personal preference. First, decide if you want a vape that gets thrown away or can be replaced. Then, decide if you want a universal battery or brand/strain-specific battery. And finally, factor in what you like most and how you can get that in the easiest, most affordable way. Of course, if you’re still unsure, you can always talk to a budtender to discuss options.
