What is Rolling Paper?

Rolling papers are sheets of thin paper that are used to create cones or pre-rolls, also known as joints. They come in a variety of sizes and can even be flavored to enhance or complement the terpenes that give each strain of cannabis its unique taste. In addition to the many dimensions and flavors rolling papers can come in, the paper itself can be made from unique materials.

What is Rolling Paper Made of?

Rolling paper for cannabis use is usually made from different plant-based fibers. These include hemp, flax, and rice straw. There are also unique plant cellulose rolling papers available that are actually see through, so you can watch the decarboxylation process as you consume. All of these materials make for great rolling papers because they actually burn slower than wood, ensuring that your product lasts long enough to enjoy your session.

In addition to the fibers that make up the paper, some rolling papers have extra additives which can change the color of the paper, how fast it burns, and even the flavor. However, more and more cannabis consumers are seeking out all-natural rolling papers to ensure they can experience the flavors and aromas of cannabis without the influence of the paper.

How Do You Choose Rolling Paper?

With all this information, you might be wondering just how you’re supposed to pick the best rolling papers.

  • Cannabis Newbie - Since there is a learning curve when it comes to learning how to roll cones, we recommend that those who are new to the process choose a type of paper that’s easier to roll. Opt for thicker paper, such as hemp-based rolling paper. The thinner the paper, the harder it is to roll, which can lead to a frustrating experience when you’re just getting started.
  • Experienced Cannabis Consumer - Look for paper that’s as thin as possible, especially if you’re planning to purchase top-tier, premium flower. This will ensure you’re only tasting the strain, not the paper.

You’ll also want to look at the size of the rolling paper. The bigger the paper, the more cannabis flower you’ll need to fill it. For example, if you’re just looking to smoke alone, a single wide rolling paper can fit the bill. If you’re smoking with another (adult!) cannabis consumer, opt for the 1 ¼ inch paper (this is also a great size paper if you’re new to rolling).

How Do You Use Rolling Paper?

Using rolling paper takes some practice to get right, but that’s half the fun! First, make sure you have the right tools:

Once you have everything you need, follow our guide below.

Step 1. Grind your Cannabis

This first step is important if you’re purchasing whole flower buds, as it will ensure the cannabis is even in both texture and size. If you don’t have a grinder, you can use your fingers, but be gentle with those trichomes. They carry important cannabinoids, terpenes, and more that contribute to the entourage effect from your marijuana.

Step 2. Decide on Filter Placement

The filter is the mouthpiece of your cone. You can purchase a premade filter when you purchase your cannabis, or you can make a filter yourself with a bit of thick paper (like cardstock). Just fold the paper into an accordion-like shape. It only needs to be about ½ inch to ¾ inch wide.

Step 3. Add Cannabis

With the adhesive side of the paper away from you and the filter placed where you want the mouthpiece, sprinkle your cannabis in a line down the paper. You want it to be spread throughout in a nice, even line, without overfilling it.

Step 4. Roll the Paper

It’s easiest to start to roll the paper at the filter as it gives you a good place to hold as you roll. You’re going to want to pick up the paper, holding the filter and edge of the paper, and make a U-shape (like a taco). Gently rock the paper back and forth to compress the marijuana and begin to roll it with the adhesive side staying up. Make sure it’s snug but not so tight that air can’t get through.

Step 5. Wet the Adhesive

Most people simply lick the edge of the adhesive side. You can use whatever method you prefer, but once the edge is damp, start at the filter and slowly seal the paper.

Step 6: Pack and Twist

If you had any pieces of flower fall out, now is a good time to grab it, along with a pen or even a chopstick, and gently pack it back into the end. Again, you want to compress and pack the cannabis, but you don’t want to restrict airflow. Once packed, twist the end to seal it up.

When finished, all you need to do is light the twisted end and start your smoke session.
