What is Delta-8?

While THC and CBD are typically the two most talked-about chemical compounds in marijuana, there are actually hundreds of cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. Delta-8 THC is one of these cannabinoids, but it’s a compound with a bit of confusion around it.

Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or delta-9 THC, is the more prominent form of THC. In fact, whenever you read “THC,” you can almost always assume this refers to delta-9 THC. Both delta-8 THC and delta-9 THC bind to your body’s endocannabinoid system. However, slight differences in each compound’s chain of carbon atoms mean the experience is different.

Delta-8 is typically known for its reduced psychoactive qualities, compared to the standard delta-9 THC. Research is still being conducted to pinpoint the exact effects of delta-8 THC. However, the National Cancer Institute has reported that it’s “an analogue of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with potential antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties.”

Is Delta 8 the same as CBD?

Delta-8 THC is actually closer to THC than CBD. What makes CBD unique is the fact that it has trouble binding to the endocannabinoid system, meaning it doesn’t produce as euphoric of an experience. Delta-8 THC and delta-9 THC, on the other hand, both do an excellent job of binding to the endocannabinoid system, resulting in stronger effects.

Why Choose Delta-8 THC Over Delta-9 THC?

Delta-8 THC is chemically similar to delta-9, but its effects can potentially be less potent. Cannabis consumers may still notice psychoactive properties from consuming delta-8, but it’s generally much more subtle than delta-9 THC.

How is Delta-8 Consumed?

Delta-8 is available in a wide variety of forms, including edibles and vapes. If you prefer to smoke this compound, you can find delta-8 in the form of vape pen cartridges.
