Not all cannabinoids are created equal

Understanding the compounds within cannabis can be tricky, especially when you start to break down the different forms of THC. Delta-8 THC has gained in popularity over the years, but it’s not uncommon for consumers to be confused about how it differs from other forms of THC.

Delta-8 THC is a minor cannabinoid, similar to the more widely known delta-9 THC. While both compounds may produce the feeling of being high, delta-8 has a lower potency and is less psychoactive.

Why Choose Delta-8 THC Over Delta-9 THC?

To understand the difference between these two cannabinoids, it’s important to know the science behind it.

Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or delta-9 THC, is the most popular cannabinoid. In fact, whenever you read “THC,” you can almost always assume this refers to delta-9 THC. Both delta-8 THC and delta-9 THC bind to your body’s endocannabinoid system to create a feeling of euphoria. However, slight differences in each compound’s chain of carbon atoms mean the experience is different.

Delta-8 is typically known for its reduced psychoactive qualities, compared to the standard delta-9 THC. Depending on the terpene profile of the product, delta-8 can provide a more relaxing experience without traditional side effects like dry mouth or paranoia.

Research is still being conducted to pinpoint the exact effects of delta-8 THC. However, the National Cancer Institute has reported that it’s “an analogue of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties.

How is Delta-8 Consumed?

Delta-8 is naturally occurring in most cannabis strains, but it’s traditionally only found in trace amounts. With the help of modern science, delta-8 can be refined from delta-9 to create vapes, tinctures, and edibles.
