Step 1: Register with the State
The first step in the medical marijuana application process in Pennsylvania is to create a profile in the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program Registry. You’ll need to have one of the following pieces of identification:
- Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license
- State-issued ID card
- Change of Address card (if applicable)
After your information is validated, you will be prompted to create a username and password. When you have created your username and password, you will see a screen that displays your account information, including your Patient ID number.
You are now registered in Pennsylvania’s Medical Marijuana Program. You will receive an email confirming your registration and detailing how to obtain a patient certification from an approved physician.
Step 2: Visit an Approved Pennsylvania Physician
Once registered, you’ll need to visit a physician who is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and obtain certification that you suffer from one of the qualifying medical conditions for medical marijuana use.
Step 3: Receive Patient Certification
If you qualify for medical marijuana in Pennsylvania, the physician will issue your patient certification directly in the state’s system. You will then receive an email with next steps on how to pay for your medical marijuana ID card.
Step 4: Get Your Card
Once you have been certified by an approved physician, you will receive an email stating that you can pay for your medical marijuana ID card. The card annual application fee is $50. Patients who participate in the following programs may be eligible for reduced fees:
- Medicaid
- PACE/PACENET
- CHIP
- SNAP
- WIC
Once you’ve paid your application fee, the state will mail you your medical marijuana card. This can take up to a few weeks.
Step 5: Your First Dispensary Visit
As soon as you have your official medical marijuana card, you can visit any state-licensed dispensary in Pennsylvania.
