Cinco de Mayo may celebrate the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla, but today it’s a day to honor Mexican culture in America. Whether you’re enjoying dishes from your favorite local Latinx eatery or hosting a backyard barbecue to celebrate the return of the warm weather, here are a few suggestions to take your Fifth of May to the next level.

There are some marijuana strains that just demand a stage on this exciting day. Some deserve notice because they descend from Mexican Landrace strains or they're simply worthy of celebration all to themselves. No matter the reason why, we think these cannabis cultivars are perfect for Cinco de Mayo:

Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

Mexican Sativa is a sativa-dominant strain (70% sativa/30% indica) that is enjoyed by both beginners and experienced cannabis connoisseurs in the United States. Its popularity comes from the moderate THC levels and its scent, which is reminiscent of fresh fruit and forests. Oddly enough, while it smells fruity, it actually has a flavor that is distinctly lemon-diesel.

Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

Trainwreck is actually a child of Mexican Sativa, Thai, and Afghani strains, making it a cultural smorgasbord of cannabinoids. At 80% sativa and 20% indica, it definitely shows that it’s a child of two strong sativas…but be warned: it has 25% THC levels. Trainwreck has a sweet scent of citrus-meets-pine and a lemony taste.

Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

If you’ve tried any strain with the name “Haze” in it (e.g. Super Lemon Haze, Purple Haze, Strawberry Haze), chances are it was a cultivar of this sativa-dominant hybrid. Haze is one of the most popular strains available with THC levels that range from a moderate 14% to a quite high 23%. It is reported to have a slightly spicy citrus flavor and aroma.

Once you’ve got your strains picked out, it’s time to kick back and enjoy a refreshing beverage to go along with your cannabis session.  

Cannabis-infused seltzers and drinks are having a big moment, with major beverage companies jumping on the “Weed Claw” trend. Cannabis drinks provide a different consumption experience, allowing for more social interactions without worrying about the smells from flower or vapes. The effects are typically felt much sooner than edibles, but, depending on the amount of THC in the beverage, it can be drawn out until the entire drink is gone.
