How is Marijuana Different Today?

Today’s marijuana is vastly different from the products of years past. Verilife operates in Massachusetts where recreational marijuana is legalized. Recreational marijuana will be legal in Illinois starting January 1, 2020.

Things to Know About Recreational Marijuana in Illinois and Massachusetts

You must be at least 21 years of age or older

You must have a valid photo ID. This can include a driver's license, passport, military ID, or ID card showing that one is over the age of 21.

Illinois

Illinois residents 21 years of age and older can possess:

  • 30g of marijuana flower
  • 5g of marijuana product in concentrated form
  • 500mg of THC contained in marijuana-infused product

Non-Illinois residents 21 years of age or older can possess:

  • 15g of marijuana flower
  • 2.5g of concentrates
  • 250mg of THC contained in a marijuana-infused product

NOTE: These totals are cumulative, meaning a person 21 years of age or older may possess a combination of marijuana flower, cannabis-infused products, and concentrates up to the limit for each category of product.

Massachusetts

Adults 21 years of age or older with a valid, government-issued ID are able to purchase up to one ounce of cannabis flower or 5 grams of concentrate per day (or equivalent).

Taxes will vary based on what is purchased and the potency level of the product (IL only). Additional taxes may include municipal or county taxes.

Transporting marijuana is illegal unless you are:

  • An adult 21 years of age or older
  • A registered medical marijuana patient, caregiver or agent of a registered marijuana dispensary

Marijuana must be secure, sealed and inaccessible during transport. It is not legal to transport marijuana in a vehicle unless it is in a reasonably secured, sealed, tamper-evident container and reasonably inaccessible while the vehicle is moving.

Even though medical and recreational marijuana is legal in some states, marijuana is still an illegal controlled substance under Federal law. You could be arrested and/or possibly face criminal charges if you cross state lines with marijuana products. 

It is never safe to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana. It is illegal to operate, navigate, or be in actual physical control of any motor vehicle, aircraft, or motorboat while under the influence of marijuana. Nothing in state law prevents the arrest or prosecution of an individual for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of marijuana. Anyone who refuses a properly requested test related to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana can face criminal charges

What is a Strain?

A strain is the variety of plant within a species. Strains define a specific cannabinoid profile—the mixture of THC, CBD, etc. within it. Each strain has its own physical characteristics, or phenotypes, such as height, leaf structure, and color. Depending on the strain and its corresponding cannabinoid profile, the plant will deliver varying effects and possible benefits. Strains can be pure, or hybrids of Sativa and Indica.

Sativa

Sativas are more invigorating and provides more cerebral effects, including euphoria and mental clarity.

Indica

Indica produces more sedative and calming effects and provides deep body relaxation.

Hybrid

Hybrids blend the phenotypes of Indica and Sativa. The amounts of THC and CBD will fall along a spectrum between Sativa and Indica.

What are the Different Ways to Consume Marijuana?

Today’s marijuana comes in many different forms that provide a variety of consumption methods, and each method offers its own unique experience. Read on to learn more about some of the most common consumption methods, and which might be right for you based on your experience and comfort level.

Flower

Flower is the bud produced by the cannabis plant and is the most widely recognized and most common form of consumption.

  • Typically has more flavor and terpenes
  • Is the most fragrant form of cannabis
  • Is inhaled via pre-roll, pipe or bowl
Vapes

A Vape pen is a small, portable cartridge that allows you to experience marijuana with one or two puffs at a time.

  • Vapes come in pre-filled cartridges that can be used with a battery or disposable that have a self-contained battery and can be disposed of once empty.
  • Vapes come in a variety of strains and strengths.
Concentrates

Concentrates is a blanket term that refers to many different cannabis extracts and forms like wax, shatter, and sugar. 

  • Concentrates have a higher potency than flower
  • Deliver a smoother hit and don’t produce a strong odor
  • Are recommended for more experienced users
  • Can be inhaled by using a honey straw or dab rig
     
Edibles
Edibles

Edibles come in a variety of forms, including chocolate, gummies, and beverages.

  • Come in many different flavors, strengths, and species (Sativa or Indica)
  • Have a delayed onset (30-90 minutes to feel full effects)
  • Discreet method of consumption, or if you would like a slower onset of effects
Sprays & Tinctures

Sprays & tinctures are alcohol-based marijuana extracts that are ingested into the bloodstream.

  • Consumed by placing directly under the tongue
  • Come in different flavors & strengths
  • Act faster than edibles
  • Discreet method of consumption
Topicals

Topicals are applied directly to the skin, and are available in the form of lotions, ointments, and transdermal patches

  • Can contain both THC and CBD
  • Can be applied to the temple, neck, elbows, knees, joints, wrists, back
